In (Chinese) food heaven at Kai

Kai Restaurant 1
Top (L/R): Lamb Shank / Wasabi prawns
Bottom (L/R):  Soft shell carb / Iberico pork with caramelised cashew
Kai Restaurant 2

Top (L/R): Lobster soup / Aromatic crispy duck
Bottom (L/R): Lobster noodle / Chilian sea bass

Kai desserts

Top (L/R): Durian souffle / 6 shades of chocolate
Bottom (L/R): Mango cake / Petit fours

Aunty Janice was in town last Monday and that often means a big feast. This time the 3 hour long feast was at Kai Restaurant. A one Michelin star Chinese restaurant that in my opinion, is not getting the publicity it deserves. Quietly refined serving to a pack house on a Monday night which can only mean one thing: very very good food!

We were in for a treat as she is chummy with the chef and we got the 'special' treatment. You know what that means right. No menu involved. The chef decides what he wants to serve us. We Chinese eat every damn thing so nothing is excluded. Dishes that were no longer on the menu but are a firm favourite (lamb shank) and new-not-on-the-menu-yet dishes (soft shell crab, iberico pork) were brought to the table.

We feast with both our eyes and taste buds and I struggle to pick a favourite - the lamb shank was my favourite then I bit into the soft shell crab and then that becomes my new favourite then the lobster came and I gave up....there is no point in this 'favourite' game.

Even the desserts are superb. The durian soufflé is to die for and you can smell the distinct aroma before the waitress placed it on the table (the Musa King durian directly flown from Malaysia). For chocolate lovers the 6 shades of chocolate looks and taste like a deconstructed snickers bar, but 10 times better!

I love the food (Hakkasan doesn't even come close). Indulgent food, a treat if I ever needed one. Or I just wait for Aunty Janice next trip to London...counting down to September!

The Big 30: Cadbury? That's not my name!

20130302_143329

"You are not sending me a surprise present to my office for my birthday right?"

"No of course not. I don't think I can out-trumped the duck"

"Good"

Scott's Big 30 birthday was on a Tuesday. Weekday birthdays can be a bummer if you are working, which he was. I didn't want him to wait until after work to open his presents. I also like the idea of him having a surprise package delivered to his office on his birthday. I have gone down the embarrassing route before  (a huge duck shaped balloon in reference to an inside joke which completely baffled his colleagues and turned him tomato red with embarrassment!) but since it was his 'biggie' I decided to play nice.

He has a sweet tooth. It arrived in a nondescript brown package. A win for him.

hmm...this Big 30 series is taking me longer than expected to write but I am keen to jot it down somewhere so we can remember it one day. We still talk about his drunken behaviour but there are bits of his birthday that I want to cherish, smaller bits that we are bound to forget with time. I think I have one more post to go

So the Easter weather in Scotland was a nice surprise. Dry (not a drop of rain!) and (fairly) windless with sun rays coming through between the clouds that on occasions, I can feel the warmth through my winter coat...and dare I say it, I was hot in Scotland - Yea, I wasn't expecting that at all!

We took a week long holiday to spend time with Scott's family. Scott was really looking forward to this break as he hasn't had one since the start of the year. Often if we are up for longer than the weekend, we make a trip to visit his granny in Arran.

The ferry to the island is always a treat involving square sausage and hash brown roll drenched in brown sauce. A rare naughty treat we indulge only on the ferry! In my mind, the calories doesn't count as we are not on land! haha

We stayed on the top deck of the ferry the whole journey to the island this time round, savouring the sun. It was clear blue sky with a scattering of clouds and sunshine. This is what spring weather should be like but the extended winter we experienced made this an unexpected surreal moment. We lapped up all the warmth we can get by shedding our winter coats.

But the surprise treat this holiday was going on Uncle Peter's boat. It was a last minute decision to take the boat out for a spin as the sun is out. We set up the boat, got into waterproof gears (oh yes...without a doubt we looked hot in those waterproof gears!) and circled Holy Isle, spotted a big big boat with a red helicopter at the back, saw a lighthouse, squinted really hard to have a good look at the Buddhist retreat on the island (no one is allowed into the retreat area of the island) then Hazel and I left the boat and the boys took it out for a 'proper man spin'. They almost fell off the boat crashing straight into a wave but that's what boys do. They survived and lived to tell the tale.

The Big 30: Beer-a-day countdown

beer before cropped

beer after

Scott was seriously dreading turning 30 this year. He wasn't looking forward to it when we ring in 2013 as D-day (26th Feb) gets closer. I thought hard about what to get him for his birthday since it is a biggie turning 30. There was the idea of getting him 30 different presents but I got stuck after present no.11 (errrr... no. 12 stripey socks, no.13 dotty socks???). Nope..ditch that idea!

Then I thought about all the little things that he enjoys - things that doesn't break the bank, things that I can easily buy/source in bulk. Things like:
- going for a run (runnings gears are fugly - ditch!)
- putting on a cheeky weekend bet on the football (I really shouldn't encourage this as I have not seen any returns!)
- watching reruns on his ipad (30 boxsets? boringsville!)
- whisky (I would have to rob HSBC to buy 30 decent bottles...I don't really love him that much - ha!)
- beer (bingo!)

I love the advent calendar idea of having something to open every day in the run up to the big day. I thought this might help soften the blow too. So I went to my local specialist wine and beer shop with my granny trolley, picked 30 beers based on either a cool name or cool branding (suckers!), walked home to the sound of clinking beer bottles (I must look like a freaking alco-addict), wrapped them all up in brown paper (I'm going for the Prohibition look) then tag them up in pink glittery paper (which completely kills the Prohibition look).

I displayed them on our kitchen table on 1st Feb. He was working late that night, looked at it in a confused manner when he came in and asked me "Are they all the same beer?" *face palm*

Yea...we are like so famous (flicks hair)!

20130102_142948

In my previous company, we were given an additional day off to do things that we want to do but never actually have the time to due to the nature of our 9-5 Monday to Friday work schedule. The idea is to spend some time away from the office and come back inspired by what we see/do and hopefully translate it into something meaningful for the business (nice PR chatline but we just took it as it is - an additional day off!) Some of my colleagues took the day off to visit a museum, watch a musical, spend time with their kids.

Me? Well I rounded up 3 of my besties from the office and we went on a house porn tour organised by Living Etc Magazine! We viewed 6 different houses in West London and had a picnic in Queen's Park. The houses were magazine styled perfection. We had a great time lapping up the interior design and casually brush our fingers across the white sofa that we are not allowed to touch or took a sneaky picture when photography is clearly not permitted. Every so often we burst into giggly fits over some design choices that tickled us. Naughty!

I know this might sound odd - like snooping into someone else's home - but if you love interior design, you would love this tour! I love it and spend too much time gawping on interior blogs and magazines. Nothing beats 'real life' tour though.  The amount of time I have my eyes fixed on an open window/door instead of the road in front of me...it is a wonder I have not hit a lamppost on my bike yet!

So this long weekend (taking Friday off!) I am:
- going on another house tour, this time viewing houses in North London with my 3 besties again. We were so excited when we found out they used a picture they took of us in their magazine to promote the event this year....Yea...we are like soooo famous - flicks hair!
- an early start on Saturday morning in Battersea Park as Scott attempts another one of his 10k runs. As a loving wife, I sit and wait (in the cold) for him to finish it in good time. Fingers cross he do it in under 40 minutes again cause you know...the faster he runs, the less time I have to sit in the cold.
- I think a celebratory lunch will be in order after his run - something carb laden to wart of the cold for me.
- There are plans for a house warming BBQ at Ming's new flat in London Bridge. Not so sure about the BBQ bit but when it involves Ming, it will be good food so I am game!
- We have a double date dinner with El and Gareth on Sunday at Morito for a one-off theater/dining experience. I am super excited about this as it is one of our favourite restaurant
- The classic London weather is not letting up and I feel like a home-baked cake is in order...I am thinking of this as I recently bought some matcha powder

Bittersweet

pau 1

It was a bittersweet trip home. But drawing from the positives, it was good to be home with my family. The last time we were all under one roof was July last year for my wedding so it felt right to be back home and hear those familiar voices and in-house jokes. I switched off - no phone, no laptop and it was a very good feeling. All my cousins were home too - all 14 of us. It has been a very very long time since we were all in the same place, albeit for a very sad reason but we were all there. There is not enough time to catch up with everyone but the emotional support was immense.

I am back in London now and still struggling to comprehend the sudden loss of a much loved uncle. I probably never will but his memories lives on.

Friday love: Salted Caramels

Salted Caramel....I don't have the guts to try it. So many burnt butter stories has put the mother of all fear in me but this recipe with its fancy .gif images are making me rethink again - and pretty molds always do it for me too . Maybe maybe huh....just need to work up some courage. I will start by stocking up on butter...I mean I always have a stash in my fridge but maybe I should have more for you know, potentially burning the butter. It is not possible to get it right the first time, the baking-god can't be that kind.

But onto this weekend:
©       We are popping over to Portobello Market for a wander. We cover our must-visit pit-stops (the vintage stall who sells me clothes at wholesale prices and the bric-a-brac man who sells broken tea cups amongst gems on Golborne Road) then it is anything that catches our eye! It has been a while since we ate at the Moroccan fish stall so we will probably pop by for some fresh grilled fish
©       We are dressing up for a murder mystery dinner party at El’s new flat on Saturday. I am Marchioness Duchamp and Scott is Dr Sigmund Fraud. I am well excited about this as I have never played this game before – I am not very good at keeping a straight face so I hope I am not the murderer!
©       Revisiting Bone Daddies Ramen for Sunday dinner with Pierre who is in London for a flying visit. He loves his rice / noodle so I think the 20 hour pork tonkotsu is going to blow his mind
©       We might attempt some garden clearing up if the weather is fine

Happy Friday!

The Big 30: Bounce Bar

Bounce Bar

This year is a biggie for Scott - he turns 30 and he is no-likey it. The only way to do it is to have a big party and accept the big 3-0 in as drunken a state as possible. The meticulous planning for the birthday weekend party starts in earnest about a month before. We considered various types of venues before settling for Bounce. We have never been ourselves but we have only heard good things about the place...the fun factor, cocktails, pizza and crucially, its ability to cater for a big group of 20.

We were completely bowled over by Bounce!! The walk down the stairs to the bar adds to the anticipation; the size of the venue opens up and the energy and atmosphere are so infectious! It really got us going...we were impatient to get to our table and start playing.

Back in high school, Scott and his friends used to play table tennis against each other during break time and the competitive streak and the odd swift moves returned pronto. Before long, buttons are undone, jackets taken off and the sweat beads start forming. This is serious stuff. We girls stayed by the sideline watching out for stray balls that came flying from all directions! At one point, Scott went in for a big hit and the ball went askew and hit a random girl right in her eye! All in good humour though...you kinda expect to get hit and thankfully ping pong balls tend not to cause too much harm (I can verify that as I got smack right in the head the minute I walked into the venue :P).

But the strong cocktails soon took effect (as per the last picture!) and we ended the night in the Adventure Bar in Covent Garden. It got messy in the Adventure Bar...too many Jagerbombs later, the pictures ain't pretty or appropriate to share but the birthday boy is happy, very happy.

The party continued the following day in a pub to watch the Six Nations Scotland vs. Ireland match. The weekend ended on a high note for Scott - Scotland won the match and his beloved Ayr United won 1-0 too. The birthday boy is very happy indeed.
